Porch of St. Denis, Walmgate, York

Inscription content

The Porch to S. Deninis's Church in Walmgate York; in the Inside of which Church are several Fragments of Saxon Architecture, interspersed amongst more modern Pillars & Arche[s] By which it appears that the present Church is built on the Plan & Ruins of an antienter [sic] Fabrick [sic]; probably, destro[yed] at the Conquest, & dedicated, over again, by the Normans, to their French Patron, St. Dionisius, or Dennis. This Church is the only Parish Church in York that has the Steeple in the Center of it.
