Scope and content
Photographs, papers and later correspondence relating to Stonehenge, mainly 1902-1921, and papers relating to Hengistbury Head, 1912.
Although Gowland never again dug at Stonehenge after 1901, several items among his correspondence show his continuing interest in the site, also indicating a degree of sympathy for the stance of Sir Edmund and Lady Antrobus towards access and ownership. Nonetheless, after the sale following the deaths of both Sir Edmund's only son in 1914 and the 4th baronet himself in 1915, and its acquisition by Cecil Chubb, and his subsequent donation of the monument to the nation in 1918, Gowland was delighted to be invited to lead the excavations to be carried out by the Society of Antiquaries with the agreement of the Office of Works. A small amount of correspondence with Hawley, in the year before Gowland's death, shows the depth of his personal engagement with the project, and indicates that Hawley treated Gowland with conventional respect (GOW/02/02/01). However, surviving correspondence among the papers of the Society itself, and in particular Hawley's many letters to the Treasurer, Jerome Bankes, FSA, from 1919 onwards (SAL/08/14/003/01), as well as the wording of two printed Presidential appeals for funds circulated to Fellows in 1919 and 1920 (SAL/08/14/004; GOW/02/01/01, no. 11), indicate that the invitation to the ailing Gowland had been little more than a courtesy. Surprisingly, his death in 1922 is not mentioned by Hawley in either the correspondence with Bankes or his excavation reports printed in the Antiquaries Journal.
Gowland's 'Report on the metals and metallurgical remains from the excavations at Hengistbury Head' was published as appendix 2 to JP Bushe-Fox, Excavations at Hengistbury Head, Hampshire, in 1911-12 (Report III of the Research Committee of the Society of Antiquaries, 1915).
