Scope and content
Offprints, pamphlets and cuttings relating to Stonehenge, published between 1883 and 1902. These are likely to have been collected by Gowland as part of his preparatory research for the 1901 excavation.

1. Page 418, Plate XXIV from Vol XXVIII (from Archaeologia XXVIII (1840), illustrating article by John Rickman, 'On the Antiquity of Avebury and Stonehenge', pp 399-419). Cutting, 1 sheet.

2. [Anonymous], Guide to the Stones of Stonehenge (1883). Pamphlet.

3. Judd, William A, Stonehenge - its probable origin, age, and uses (1893). Pamphlet, with ownership note on cover 'Wm. Cunnington, 58 Acre Lane SW'.

4. Sinnett, A P, 'The Pyramidical Stonehenge', Transactions of the London Lodge of the Theosophical Society, no. 19 (December 1893). Offprint in pamphlet format, inscribed with the author's compliments [possibly not addressed to Gowland].

5. Judd, JW, 'Notes on the Structure of Sarsens', Geological Magazine, decade IV, Volume VIII, no 439 (January 1901), pp 1-2. Offprint, inscribed to Gowland with the author's kind regards. 1 sheet.

6. Antrobus, Lady [Florence], 'Stonehenge 1901', Country Life (19 October 1901), pp 485-487. Cutting, 2 copies, 2 sheets each.
The photographs used overlap with those among Gowland's collection, and are probably all from the set taken by Clarissa Miles:
'Sifting Earth and Chalk' (p 485) is similar to but not among those in Gowland's papers, although a copy is in Wiltshire Museum DZSWS:1986.7455.
'View of Apparatus' (p 485) is the same photograph as GOW/01/10/03, used in Archaeologia 58 (1902), fig 5.
'Leaning Stone as it was' (p 486) is the same as Archaeologia 58 (1902), fig 2 (proof sheets at GOW/01/03/01, no 2; GOW/01/05/02).
'Cradle for Stone' (p 486): is the same photograph as GOW/01/10/09.
'Stonehenge: the Staging' (p 487) is similar to but not among those in Gowland's papers, was not used in Archaeologia 58, and does not appear to be in the set in Wiltshire Museum.
'An important operation (p 487) is the same as Archaeologia 58 (1902), fig 4 (also GOW/01/05/03; GOW/01/10/02).

7. 'P.H.', 'The Age of Stonehenge / What Archaeology Says / What Astronomy Says', The Sphere, (4 January 1902), pp 26-27. Cutting, 2 sheets.
The photograph lent by Gowland (top of p 27) is a composite of elements of three figures in Archaeologia 58 (1902): upper: fig 21 b (top row) and fig 22b (middle row); lower: fig 15 a and b (top row). A photographic print showing 15a and b is at GOW/01/04/02, no 3.

8. [Anonymous], The Athenaeum no.3871 (4 January 1902), p 21: account of meeting of the Society of Antiquaries, 12 December 1901, at which Gowland read a paper on 'Excavations at Stonehenge'. Cutting, 1 sheet.

Blow, Detmar J, 'The Architectural Discoveries of 1901 at Stonehenge', Journal of the Royal Institute of British Architects (25 January 1902), pp 121-136; and Lockyer, Sir Norman, 'An attempt to ascertain the date of the original construction of Stonehenge from its orientation', pp 137-142. Cutting, which continues to p 148 of the issue.
Blow's paper was accompanied by lantern slides, some of which were reproduced as illustrations in the published version (p 126).
