Scope and content
Photographs, most with added watercolour and mounted on to card, presented by Margaret Stokes to the Society of Antiquaries of London. A note on the folder in which these items were previously kept suggests that the first donation on 12 January 1882 may have been of 8 or 9 coloured and mounted photographs, and that a further 12 were given in around 1886. There are now 22 mounted loose items. One of the 22 appears not to have a photographic base, this being Figure of Christ in purple robes: ‘All ye shall be offended in me this night’ from the Book of Kells.

The majority of objects depicted are now in the National Museum of Ireland, Dublin.

The donation of January 1882 is recorded in Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries, second series, IX, 1883, p. 34, meeting of 12 January 1882, ‘some drawings, photographs, and coloured photographs of Irish objects of art and antiquity were on view, having been presented by Miss Margaret Stokes, by whom many of the drawings were executed, and to whom a Special Vote of Thanks was awarded’.
