Richard Gough (Director): a Description of Haddon House [Hall] in Derbyshire and drawings by the late Jacob Schnebbelie. Residence of William Peverell in Stephen’s reign [earlier, ca. 1086], then Vernon family in that of Richard I [earlier, ca. 1170]. Later, in 4 Hen. 6 [1426], Sir Richard Vernon was Speaker at Leicester Parliament, then Treasurer of Calais [1445]; d. 1451. His son [Sir William] succeeded as Treasurer, then appointed last Constable of England [d.1467]. His successor, Sir Henry Vernon, was Governor and Treasurer to Prince Arthur, 15 Hen. 7, and witnessed marriage articles between Arthur and Katherine of Aragon; Arthur allegedly spent much time at Haddon. Thereafter, Sir George Vernon’s heir married John Manners, later 2nd Earl of Rutland (1641), and the property was the Earl then Duke of Rutland’s principal residence for more than a century until Belvoir Castle was favoured. Mr Gough then described the situation, development and layout of the castellated mansion, external and internal, with contents and armorial bearings. He went on to review other ancient castellated mansions, distinguishing those on former defensive sites and those not, as well as late 15th century brick-built private houses of nobility and gentry. He ended noting that memorials of the two Haddon families, Vernon and Manners, in Bakewell Church, had been included in Vol 2 of his Sepulchral Monuments of Great Britain. After considering Mr Schnebbelie’s drawings and notes, Gough concluded with an appreciative tribute to that late acclaimed draughtsman whose work, accumulated by the Society over 5 years, would stand as lasting testament to his talent.
