Scope and content
Dr. Ferris presented a shield found ca. 12 years earlier, dug out of a large moss in Ayrshire, Scotland. Placed in a ring with others, several feet below the surface, only this one remained. Circular and made of brass, it was embossed in the middle to allow a hand grip. This is the 'Beith Shield' (https://collections.sal.org.uk/object-ldsal80).
Richard Gough (Director) showed a 1777 drawing by Major [Hayman] Rooke of ancient octagonal font at Bolton in Bolland, Yorks., [Bolton-by-Bowland, now Lancs.] ornamented with the arms of Pudsey [Pudsay] [Vert, a chevron between three mullets pierced Or] and other families married in [Bank; Tunstall; Percy; Clifford; Tempest; Hammerton; Layton].
At the bottom of four sides were pairs of brass strips with a black letter inscription: [Orate p[ro] a[n]i[m]ab[u]s / d[omin]i Radul / phi Pudsay / milit[is] & de / Edinie uxor[is] / eius ac d[omi]ni / W[i]li Pudsay / filij ea[rum] (for eorum) co[n]d[am] (for quondam) rec/tor[is] hui[us] eccl[es]ie] (Pray for the souls of Ralph Pudsay knight and of Edwina his wife and Sir William their son once rector of this church)].
Bolton Church [the Pudsay Chapel of Bolton church] was built in first half of 16th century with material from Sawley Abbey, when the font was brought from Barford [Barforth] Church in diocese of Durham to Bolton by one of the Pudsays, whose family had the presentation of that living.
Resumed reading survey of manor of Wimbledon, Surrey, copied by John Caley, with further detailed listing of rooms and staircases in the house, as well as fabric of the building with mention of some contents. Description and valuation of gardens, courts and terraces, with furnishings and buildings, plants, hedges, ornamental and fruit trees.
