The following Fellows were admitted to the Society: Thomas Hibbert and Samuel Solly.
More extracts from the late Major General Roy’s work on Roman military antiquities in North Britain were read, including a description of the temporary camps of Agricola remaining in Scotland. Progress made since first discovery of these camps was noted, highlighting their figure, situation and capacity. Two kinds were identified: larger, containing the whole army, less any detachments; smaller, used by the same army when separated into divisions. Further distinction was their situation in 3 districts: English border to Antonine Wall; thence to River Tay; then in Strathmore between River Tay and east of Grampian Mountains. Analysis of camps in the 3 sets provided location, size and capacity. Only 3 of the sites discovered would have contained Agricola’s whole army within same entrenchment, though others were anticipated, relating specifically to the battle with Galgacus [Mons Graupius ca. AD 83].
