Scope and content
The following Fellow was elected: John Wilmot of Bedford Row, Master in Chancery and FRS.
Mr. James Roberts, portrait painter to the Duke of Clarence, presented a print of St. Frideswide’s Shrine in Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford.
Mr. Lamb of Reading, through Dr. Schomberg, presented two wooden images recently discovered there during repair of the Old Bridewell. Found under the old Chapel, both appeared originally richly gilt; one taken to be St. Peter, the other a Lamb with a Griffin possibly holding a cross.
Richard Gough (Director): an account of subsidy collection in 1382 by Prior of Barnwell, Cambridge. With seal representing Martyrdom of Thomas Becket, the deed acknowledged receipt of a moiety from the Rector of Grantchester arising from a Church schism leading to Urban VI proclaiming a Crusade against Clement VII in 1382, in the time of Richard II, for which Henry Spencer, Bishop of Norwich, was declared General. The response from laity and clergy to indulgences like those for war against the Infidel, led Parliament to grant a subsidy in 1383. Spencer had gained military experience during the peasants’ revolt within his diocese. Discussion touched on his campaign in Flanders and France, successes and failures, including the seizing and later restoration, following intercession by the Bishop of Ely, of Bishop Spencer’s temporalities in 1385. Summarising the expense of the campaign and noting Spencer’s pardon by the King in 1391, Mr Gough asserted the value of monuments in throwing light on our history, such as published Rolls of Parliament in this instance.
Robert Riddell: two drawings of a stone Celt, found at Kelton on the River Dee, near the Castle of Thrieve (Threave) in Galloway.
