The following Fellow was recommended for election: James Deacon.
The following Fellows were elected: Sir William Young Bt. and Rev. Thomas Orme, MA.
Paper read from Major [Hayman] Rooke on antiquities recently found in Sherwood Forest, adding to his earlier accounts of Roman road and other works, regarding a very large Roman Camp at South end of Sherwood Forest, on Holly Hill near Arnold. Included plan described double ditch, vallum, praetorium. Aligned with exploratory camps at Oxton, Combs and Hexgreave, it marked progress of Roman Army through the area.
Another ancient site, Lovely Grange, near Oldox and Oxton; partial remains, possibly Roman. Coins found in and near these camps, seen by Rev. Pegge and Major Rooke, confirmed Roman presence. Another forest site, west of Oxton, appeared to have been the work of ancient Britons.
Major Rooke described opening one of three tumuli near Oxton containing rusted iron funerary urn with wooden casing; sword in wooden scabbard; some unperforated, coloured glass beads, probably amulets; beads and arms together very unusual and possibly unique; source possibly Phoenician traders in pre-Roman times. Drawings provided.
Another nearby barrow with enclosure had previously been opened by Major Rooke. Containing a large circular body of clay with evidence of ashes but no urn, bones or weapons, he conjectured a sepulchre for several British warriors slain in battle.
