The following Fellow was recommended for election: Lewis Charles Montolieu.
The following Foreign Member was recommended for election: His Excellency the Count de Florida Blanca, First Minister of State to his Catholic Majesty (the King of Spain).
The following Fellows were elected: Fowler Walker, James Walker and Lewis Majendie.
The following candidate was not elected: Paul Benfield.
Richard Gough (Director) exhibited drawings of a colossal granite statue lately found in Egypt, in a lake some 30 miles from Alexandria.
Letter from Thomas Astle concerning an ancient Charter in his library by King Edgar relating to the Abbey at Ely, formerly established by Saint Etheldreda and restored in his reign under Ethelwold, Bishop of Winchester, in which the King, in return for land, money and a gold crucifix, agreed to surrender the whole district in the Isle of Ely and several other possessions for the endowment of the monastery at Ely and for the maintenance and support of the monks. Mr Astle went on to adduce inconsistencies as evidence that the charter, dated AD 970, might not be authentic, being either a later copy or forgery by the monks for the purpose of establishing claims to their possessions, but also noted confirmation of similar powers and privileges to the Abbot and monks of Ely by later monarchs, ceasing with the Reformation.
