H.R.H. the Duke of Clarence signified his intention of becoming a Fellow of the Society.
The following Fellows were recommended for election: Thomas Walker of Lincoln’s Inn Fields, Accountant General of the High Court of Chancery; and Lieutenant Colonel Henry Barry, 39th Regiment of Foot.
Sir Joseph Banks exhibited Clay Moulds for casting Roman coins, found in the Car Dyke, Lincolnshire.
Letter from Thomas Astle to Robert Austin concerning his ancient Charter exhibited to the Society, evidencing that use of the word “Sigillum” in Saxon times meant only the sign of the cross and not, as afterwards among the Normans, a seal of wax appendant. Astle concluded that Austin’s charter was not Anglo Saxon in origin but an Anglo Norman forgery.
