"This Parish & manor was in the reign of the Conqueror, the Abbots of Westminster’s which
Domesday book sheweth in these words.
The Land of St. Peter of Westminster. – Gilbert the son of Turrold. holds Cumbrintune
Edric one free man held it – There are nine hides & in demesne one carucate & a priest
& seven villans & two bordars with four carucates There are two servants & two
maid servants & thirty acres of meadow – There is a frenchman who holds one
hide & has one caruscate & two servants & one maid servant. The same
Edric did the same service which the other free men did – It was worth six pounds
now seventy shillings.
To this belongs one Berewick of ten hides – Ulf & Ansgot held & mowed
in the lords meadow one day in the year & served as others. – Now Gilbert holds
these aforesaid ten hides & has there three caruscates in demesne & fourteen villans
& six bordars with eleven caruscates There are four servants and one maid servant
& a mill rendering thirty horse loads of Wheat. & thirty acres of meadow. A
wood one mile long & as much broad. - The whole was worth ten Pounds now
a hundred shillings"
