"1.p.254 The Church is dedicated to St. Michael

Notes 2.15.1818
The Church is situated at nearly the south Extremity of the Village
It consists of a Nave Chancel both roofed with Tiles & coarse Slates & Tower at the West End. – It is built of stone from
the neighbouring Bredon Hill – a greyish Lime Stone.
The East End of the Chancel has been rebuilt & the small Stones being burnt
supplied Lime for the Mortar. – A Crofs at the East End has been replaced.
The East Window is a regular pointed Arch – with new glazing – the North & South Sides
have similar Windows. Viz. 1, a two light trefoil headed Window with two leafy
& a circular Mullion under a regular arch. & 2, a flat topped Window with two trefoil
headed lights & trefoil Mullions in the Center. – all these four Windows are now
walled up.-
[note in margin – trusses to ch.?]
There is a brick buttrefs at the N.E. Corner of Chancel, & indeed it may be remarked
that the Whole Building appears internally to lean to the North, this may arise
from Land springs from the Hill for on digging Graves in the Church Yard, which
is a gravelly Soil, they have frequently Water in them.
The Chancel has a flat plaster.d ceiling, is raised one step from the Church. The floor is paved with bricks & old flags
There are two steps. to the Communion Rails, which as well as the Table is of old
Oak carved – There are open seats with Desks on each side. – The Opening to
the Church is by a heavy circular arch. – In the East Wall. On the South Side of
Comm.n Table are the Remains of a Piscina, und.r a trefoil arch. The shelf remains but the front is broken up.
[note in margin – It is for / vs. op.-/ water/ ing?]
The Church has a coved plastered Roof, the floor is paved with brick & broken stones
there are two Pews, one for the Rector & another for two Estates in the Parish.-"

"The rest are heavy old oaken seats with a plank laid on the bare Soil
The Pulpit is in the N.East Corner, modern painted – but some of the Old Pulpit
has been used on which the Initials RG & ID. A Corbel of Stone, to support the Roof Loft remains.-
The Font is at the West End of the Church, ancient octagon with shields in
quatrefoils – standing on an Ogonal Pillar, with a rude base of two flights of
stone. It is lined with Lead & large enough for Immersion. The Irons which
fastened down the Cover still remain.
There is a modern square window, formed from an old one, on the North
Side. & on the South a regular arched one with modern glazing [note a small 2 Light flatt topped one?], & a Dorm.r
to give Light to a singing Gallery at the West End.

The Tower consists of three stories embattled with crocketed Pinnacles & finials
& Goggles at the Corners.- the Goggles seem to be coarse but strong featured Heads – the N.E. a [gap], S.E. an animal with its Tongue out [more text in gutter]
The Upper Story has two light Windows with trefoil Heads.
The Lower Story appears internally to be of greater antiquity than the present
Church. On the South side is a deep recessed Window, with 2 pointed Lights
but this externally appears a flat topped one. – the West Window is also
recessed – though externally 2 trefoil head.d Light w.th 4 foil Mullions - the
arch open.g to the Church is very loft – but on the Sides there seems
to have been low octagon Pillars which supported a lower Roof - the
whole has been so altered, I apprehend, as to give it a verry differed appea-
rance – It is feet wider than the two upper Tiers on the N. & S. & their space is
roofed over, but the Pitch of the Roofs differ from that of the Church
It contains 5 bells
1. Mat: Bagley 1687
2. William Watmor Rector 1687
3. John Emes Gent
4. Richard Creese and Edward Stait Churchwardens.
5. Edward Walker gent. Mathew Baglet made mee 1687.
The Entrance to the Chancel on the North is by a narrow pointed recessed Door, & the Water Line over it terminates with
a crowned female with Muffler & Weil on the E. & a crowned male head with flow.g hair & twisted Beard on
the West.- The South Door of Church. is nearly similar, now stopped up – the figures are much mutilated
but the female has a fillet instead of Crown & the Male one seems nearly to have his own hair – the North
Entrance now used is by a regular pointed arch under a stone Porch tiled"
