Vellum. Formerly kept in a leather case (together with a tortoiseshell comb; Minute Book IX, ibid.).
Certificate of Father Franciscus Maria a Politio, apostolic commissary, as guardian ('Sacri Montis Sion Guardianus'), that (Sir) William Hedges of Wiltshire had visited Jerusalem, the Holy Sepulchre, Mount Calvalry, etc., and other holy places in Judea, Galilee and Samaria; dated from the convent of St Saviour, Jerusalem, 23 Oct. 1666. With the signature and papered seal of the Guardian. Preamble giving the offices of Father Franciscus in a cartouche supported by two cherubs; over it his arms with Inquisition cross. Scrolled shield and crest of Hedges, superimposed with the initial N (Notum) at the beginning of the certificate. Elaborate penwork border including, at the head, the arms of Jerusalem, at the foot drawings of Jerusalem, the Holy Sepulchre (dexter) and Tomb of the BVM (sinister); remainder of borders consists of foliage, flowers, etc., cherubs. Name of artist 'F. Sanctus a Messana' at the foot, dexter.
