Scope and content
A collection said to be 'Arms of Nobility collected by Nicholas Charles Lancaster herald of Arms' (18th century title, fol. v; see also fol. 13). Preceded by a list (fols. 1-10) of creations of peers from Henry, Prince of Wales, 4 June 1610, to 1626, in a later 17th-century hand. The main collection consists of arms in trick, many incomplete. Begins (fol. 11 = original p.2) with the arms of William the Conqueror. At fol. 13 rough heading 'The Booke of all the Nobiletie wth theire quartered Coates ... in the Raigne of Elisabeth ...' with added notes referring to Nicholas Charles; followed by arms of peers arranged according to precedence. Later (18th century) additions include annotations of names; arms of Granville-Leveson from the Garter plate, 1771, of John (Leveson-Gower), 1st Earl Gower 1746, 1st Marquess of Stafford 1786, fol. 111; arms of Scottish peers, fols. 113-130; miscellaneous kings, beginning with Charles I and including Hengist, King of the Saxons in Kent (fol. 134), fols. 130v, 131v-40v. Index, fols. 141-8v.
