Scope and content
'The Legend of St Cuthbert' (heading, fol. 1, repeated throughout) by Robert Hegge (1599-1629) of Durham, compiled July 1626 fol. ii verso); copy, late 17th century. Sources given in the letter to the 'Reader' (fol. ii). The Legend is followed by a contents list of the Red Book of Durham (fol. 27v) and a brief account (fols. 28-41v) of the sees of Lindisfarne and Durham, with notices of bishops from Aidan to Anthony Beck (imperfect). The Legend was first published in 1663 by Richard Baddeley, private secretary to Bishop Norton, who suppressed the author's name and attributed the work to 'B. R. Esq.' (DNB). See also the editions by George Allan, FSA (Darlington, 1777) and John Brough Taylor, FSA (Sunderland, 1816).
