Scope and content
A contemporary transcript of speeches, 1624-9, and other items by Sir John Eliot; c. 1630. According to C. I. Elton (Proc., 2nd ser., 10 (1883-5), 131-2) the manuscript was probably prepared from a draft and corrected in accordance with the speeches as delivered. Contents list, fols. ii-iii verso. The speeches (fols. 1-149v) are followed by :- (1) 'An recte fecerit Socrates quod accusatus non responderit', relating to the action against Eliot and others in the Court of King's Bench, 26 Jan. 1630. fols. 150-83;- (2) 'The humble petition of Sr John Eliot Kr. prisoner in the Gatehouse concerning the loan'. Eliot was imprisoned in the Gatehouse, 1627, for refusing to pay his share of the forced loan. fols. 183v-8.
