Paper; ff. ii + 56. Small quarto. Vellum. Scribbles on fol. 56v include the names of Lewis Lloyd and William John Watkin. On fol. ii a summons for William Watkin to answer the charge of grievous hurting of Thomas Price Thomas issued at Gwernevell, 3 Feb. 1608/9.
Scope and content
The Historie of Brechon fro(m) the tyme of Meyrycke [Meurig, son of Gwairydd, son of Cynbeline] K: of Bry(ttone) & sonne to the noble Gweyrydh Whoe forced Claudius Caesar to flight Vntill the present yeare of redemption 1606' (heading, fol. 5); after 1606. The contents relate chiefly to the history of the lordship of Brecon. With tables of the kings of England (the early kings derived from Geoffrey of Monmouth or from one of the Welsh translations) and genealogies of the lords of Brecon. At the front of the volume 'The testimony of Fortunatus Concerninge the p(re)sence of Saint Paule in Brittaine', fol. 1, followed by six lines of Latin verse from Venantius Fortunatus beg. 'Quid sacer ille simul Paulus..' (Vita Sancti Martini, iii, lines 488-94; Migne, PL, 88, cols. 405-6), and a note in English on the conversion of the Britons, etc.; Latin epitaph on King Arthur, with English translation (from Leland, see Collectanea, V (1774), 51), fol. 3r, v.
