Scope and content
Passages missing from the first printed edition (1567) of the Historia Rerum Anglicarum of William of Newburgh, copied (cf. note, fol. 1) from a manuscript, c. 1200, formerly of the Augustinian Priory of St Mary at Newburgh, Yorks, now BL Stowe MS 62. Copied from the MS when it was in the possession of Sir Henry Spelman (see note by Sir Roger Twysden, 2nd Bt., 23 Jan. 1635/6, fol. 36). On fol. 36v a note by Twysden describing his source (which agrees exactly with the contents page of the Stowe MS) and noting that portions of book 3 were missing by comparison with the (first) edition of Newburgh's history (Antwerp, 1567), a copy of which was also owned by Spelman. The present extracts correspond to the edition in the Rolls Series, Vol. 82, parts 1, 2 (1884, 1885), Book 4, cap. 36 (with rubric for 37); Book 5, caps. 6, 7 (with rubric for 8); caps. 22-6 (with rubric for 27); caps. 29, 30 (slightly imperfect at the end); cap. 33 (with rubric for 34). Twysden later owned the Spelman MS (Stowe MS 62) and supplied missing text in this. See also MSS/0065.
