Original vellum front cover, white, with gilt-tooling (London binding), fol.i. Flourished signature, 'per me Edmundum Johnson', fol.2. Signature 'per me Thomam Lingwoode', fol.82v, at the end of the text (not the scribe). List of names beg. 'Mr Lewis Higgins of London Hill', 17th century, fol.1. Note, 18th century, 'Miscell: Vol.12.B(?)', on the cover, fol.i. Impression of a binding stamp, with motto 'Non nobis nati', early 17th century, fol.3v.
Scope and content
'The Historie of the Christian Princes warrs agaynst the Turks written in latten by one Robert a Monke.. now translated into Englishe by Timothie Pymm' (fol. 3). A translation by Timothy Pymm of the Historia Hierosolymitana of Robert of Reims (written c. 1122) based on the Gesta of the first Crusade, 1095. For the Latin text see the edition in Recueil des Historiens des Croisades. Historiens Occidentaux (Académie des Inscriptions et Belles Lettres; Paris, 5 vols., 1844-95). Dedication by Timothy Pymm to Henry Wriothesley, 3rd Earl (1581) of Southampton (d. 1624), fols. 4-5. Timothy Pymm (Pimm) also translated and published a selection of works by St Augustine and others, The Sinners glasse Containing Augustine's Ladder to Paradise.. (1609). On fol. 83v, in a different hand, five rhyming couplets headed 'Merlins prophecie' beg. 'Stoniford renownd iyore'.
