Loose:
1. 1902, 6 February: Letter from Sandars to Gowland: reminds him of promise to send a copy of 'Early Metallurgy of Silver and Lead' when published; is still interested in ancient mining, and has brought back from Spain some examples of Roman lead pipe; also has an almost complete set of Roman lead weights; gives figures for analysis of a pig of lead found at Cartagena, now in the Museum in Madrid.

2. 1902, 7 February: Letter from Sandars to Gowland, thanking him for the copy of 'Early Metallurgy'; enclosing a photograph of 'a lead vessel found at a mine near La Carolina' in Spain.
With small photographic print, showing vessel.

On a tag:
3. 1902, 8 June. Letter from Sandars to Gowland: recently returned from Spain; asks Gowland about the name on a recently-discovered pig of lead from a mine shaft; Mr Enthoven of Gracechurch Street has a lead pig dredged from Cartagena harbour a few years ago, which he allowed Sandars to photograph; Sandars now offers the photograph to Gowland, with a description of the pig.
With two separate sheets: a photographic print, mounted on card; a rubbing of the inscription on the pig.
Henry John Enthoven (d 1925) was chairman of H J Enthoven and Sons, a lead smelting and refining company.

4. 1903, 13 April. Letter from Sandars to Gowland: sending a sketch of pyramidal lead pug found in the Terreras mine at Villanueva del Duque, Cordoba, with note that 'the blue print was taken from a sketch, made by an artist, and not from a correct drawing of the pig' (he asks to have the drawing back at some point); is going to Spain again and hopes to 'get hold of' two lead pigs found by sponge divers off Cartagena.

5. 1905, 13 March. Letter from Sandars to Gowland, thanking him for slides of two maps of Spain; Gowland had expressed wish to analyse the lead pig from Cartagena harbour - perhaps he could have a sample taken while the pig is at the Antiquaries, as Sandars would like to return it to Enthoven; recalls that Gowland would like to analyse 'the slab of copper' which belongs to Sandars - he will send it to the Royal School of Mines; requests the return of 'the little bronze image' without any patina; adds that he will be pleased to offer the enlarged photograph of the Linares bas-relief to any institution Gowland cares to name.

6. 1905, 11 November. Letter from Sandars to Gowland: thanks him for his letter and the return of the drawing [see no 4 above] and the 'squeeze' of the lead pig; hopes to expand his proposals for a paper for the journal co-edited by Gowland and 'Mr Frechville'; asks how Gowland's paper on silver is progressing; still has a small silver ingot with a Celtiberian inscription, found in Spain, but now that his article in the Revue Numismatique has appeared, he hopes to give the ingot to a museum.

Sandars died in 1922. For his own collections, see SAH (formerly SAL MS 959).
