Scope and content
The one common theme of the contents of this box is Gowland's interest in historical metallurgy. The notes appear to have been brought together in the later years of Gowland's life, probably in relation to publications, whether completed or in progress, although some date from much earlier.

A few papers fall into specific categories:
• Receipts for drawings and photographs made for use in lectures and publications (GOW/04/01)
• Drawings and photographs collected for publications (GOW/04/02)
• Correspondence (GOW/04/03)
• Notes relating to furnaces (GOW/04/04)
• One small artefact (GOW/04/05)

The remaining original contents (GOW/04/06) consist of manuscript notes, many by Gowland himself, often taken from publications which he had read or consulted (including a significant number in German); some which appear to be early drafts; cuttings from journals, not always identified or dated; a small amount of correspondence relating to particular batches of notes.

The final item is a file on Gowland's collection of Japanese artefacts, sold to Augustus Franks in 1889, and now in the British Museum (GOW/04/07).
