Scope and content
Correspondence and notes concerning Stonehenge and the recent excavations and work there.
Gowland's continuing interest is illustrated by notes (3 sheets) dating from c.1918, which appear to be a draft (not all in Gowland's handwriting) for his intervention at a meeting of the Society of Antiquaries on 21 November 1918, later printed in Proceedings, 2nd series XXXI (2928-29), p 4.
Correspondence
1. 1905, 28 February. Letter from HC [Henry Clifton] Sorby, Sheffield, to Gowland: there are references to Stonehenge in early Welsh literature, as 'Caer Caradawg'; also Avebury, as 'Moel Eown'; Sorby is interested in the dates for Stonehenge given by Sir Norman [Lockyer] in Nature and by Gowland, with his particular concern being the date of the arrival of the Cymry in Britain; adds, in relation to Silchester, that he thinks he has seen an early reference to a Bishop of Silchester. 1 sheet.
2. 1905, 10 May. Letter from G[eorge] Abbott, Tunbridge Wells, to Gowland: enclosing two photographs taken at Stonehenge, showing the surfaces of some of the stones, including no.4, before re-erection; discusses continuing weathering; has been asked to write a paper on the subject for Country Life and requests permission to use Gowland's fig 28, p 43, in Archaeologia. 1 sheet.
3. 1915, 11 January. Letter from William Greenwell, Durham, to Gowland: has recently acquired a collar and brooch, and a friend has another brooch, all from the same source and all silver, until recently accepted 'without suspicion'; recent expert analysis shows high purity; does Gowland think this indicates' genuineness or the contrary'; could it have been achieved I prehistoric times? Attached: a separate page of analytical notes by Gowland, with draft reply to Greenwell: such purity 'possible but ultimately improbable'. 2 sheets.
Other notes
4. after 1901. Notes by Gowland concerning copper-tin alloys, with a draft illustration to show the change in structure produced by variations in thermal treatment. Refers to experiments conducted by W[illiam] Campbell, published in Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers 20 December 1901, p 1211. 3 sheets.
5. 1901 or 1902. Lists of photographs, lantern slides, diagrams and illustrations from 'Jap. Books', relating to the illustrations for Gowland's paper in Archaeologia 58 (1902).
The first page lists 23 photographs numbered on the left-hand side of the page, of which 19 are marked as 'sent to Higgs', requiring 3 [prints] of each (1 mounted, two unmounted); most of them have additional numbers on right-hand side of page, which may relate to the pencilled numbers on the back of several of the prints scattered through GOW/01, or possibly to the numbers of the set of photographs taken by Clarissa Miles, or to some unknown sequence. Additional brief notes at the foot of the page.
The second page lists 31 lantern slides, various 'diagrams and exhibits', and 7 pictures from 'Jap[anese] Books'.
2 sheets.
For the making of various negatives and prints for reproduction, and 31 lantern slides, by Claude Higgs; and for the making of 13 diagrams for Gowland's paper, by Margaret Reeks: see GOW/02/01, no 1.
6. 1902, 22 May. Printed notice of a lecture to be given by Gowland to the Cambridge Antiquarian Society. 1 sheet.
7. c.1903. Unrelated sheets of notes of varying sizes, concerning ?Ugborough 1903, Stonehenge and elsewhere. 4 sheets.
8. 1918? Notes which appear to be a draft (not all in Gowland's handwriting) for his intervention at a meeting of the Society of Antiquaries on 21 November 1918, later printed in Proceedings, 2nd series XXXI (2928-29), p 4. 3 sheets.
9. Undated. Sheets of varying sizes, containing notes, some taken from publications, others concerning metals and flint. 7 sheets.
