From the collection of John Gough Nichols, grandson of John Nichols. Acquired at his sale, Sotheby's, 4 Dec. 1874, part of lot 975 (eleven volumes) by Evelyn Philip Shirley, FSA, of Ettington Park, Warw., (he was 'Mr Ardenne' in Disraeli's novel, Lothair). The other volumes from the series are now in the Bodleian Library, S.C. 47260-8 (MSS Gough Top. gen. 39-44, purchased at the Ettington Park sale, Sotheby's, 29 Apr. 1947, lot 295; MSS Gough Top. gen. 46, 47 purchased from E.
