Nine notebooks and unbound papers.
Scope and content
Ten field notebooks, etc., of Dr Eliot Curwen, MB, FSA (1865-1950).

As a young man, Dr Curwen accompanied Wilfred Grenfell on his journey to Labrador in 1893, compiling a journal and taking photographs of the expedition. Dr Curwen was also a keen amateur archaeologist. He compiled the notebooks in this collection while exploring the countryside of Great Britain and Ireland, but he had a particular interest in the county of Sussex, where he lived.

The material discusses ancient sites across Great Britain and Ireland. It includes information on their history, the artefacts associated with them (e.g. pots and coins), their geology and the languages that might have been spoken there. Detailed sketches, diagrams and photos are also included. There are indexes in CUR/01-03, 08, 09.

For Curwen's obituary, see The Antiquaries Journal, 30 (1950), 237.
