Scope and content
The author does not explicitly state when this volume was compiled, but it is likely, judging by the handwriting, that it was mostly around the same time as Volumes I and II, i.e. c.1880-1881. The Journey to Derbyshire is dated 1886, but other church entries are recorded as 1903. A newspaper cutting about Finchingfield is dated as late as 1936 and some photos showing cars probably also date from the 1930s.
Title page: ‘Descriptions of Churches in Essex and Other Counties’.
Followed by the Index (4pp).
Churches in Essex (pp. 1-98); churches in Suffolk (pp. 99-114); churches in Norfolk (pp. 115-119); churches in Kent (pp. 121-134, followed by fifteen unpaginated pages of sketches relating to Canterbury), St James’s church, Bristol, and churches in Somerset (pp. 135-155); churches in Essex (pp. 156-159); St Mary’s, Shrewsbury (p. 160); churches in Somerset and Bristol (pp. 161-252); notes about a holiday in Derbyshire (23pp, no illustrations, only the first page – p. 253 – is paginated).
Holiday in Derbyshire: Discusses topographical features of places they pass through on their journey from London to Derbyshire. Days are spent walking. Wild flowers they find are noted. Interesting detail given about the air quality which changes from ‘pure’ in the early morning to ‘sulphurous fumes’ as the factories start work. Mention of taking ‘citrate of Magnesia’ with them ‘to make a cooling drink when we came to springs.’ Derogatory remarks made about Manchester, which they pass through on their way home.
Two further unpaginated sections, as follows:
1. Notes on geological features (the Wealden district, Brighton district, Hunstanton cliff section, chalk and boulder clay at Saffron Walden, Eocene strata at Bramford, Red Crag at Bawdsey, Norwich Crag, cliff section at Pakefield, glacial deposits near Chelmsford, geology of the Polden Hills, Blue Lias at Quantocks Head, Rhaetic, or Penarth, beds, Rhaetic beds at Blue Anchor). Includes a section entitled ‘Our holiday in the Island’ (i.e. the Isle of Wight). Date of June [18]89 given. Details about life on the island at the time. Mention of ‘getting back to the hotel as the ‘Curfew tolled’. Mention of Lady Margaret Sackville (1881-1963) as a child and Mrs [Patsy] Cornwallis-West.
2. Classification of igneous rocks.
