Statement by William Blaxton, Mayor of Newcastle upon Tyne, and the Commonalty of the same town concerning an annual rent of 26s. 8d. due to the Mayor for the use of the town bridge from a messuage in a street called 'le Closse' (The Close), Newcastle upon Tyne, granted by Henry, Count of Northumberland. William Blaxton, merchant, holds the messuage, which is situated between a tenement of the Hospital of St Katherine the Virgin on the Mountain of the Sands, Newcastle, which is inhabited by William Bird on the west, and a lane called 'Boerchare' (Bower Chare) on the east and extends from the King's highway in the north to 'le groundebe aque' of the Tyne on the south. At a meeting held in the Guildhall on 22 March 11 Ed IV (1470/1), the Mayor and Commonalty with the consent of the whole guild agreed to remit 25s. of the said rent, reserving 20d to be paid annually to the use of the bridge.
