English translation of an earlier grant by Sir Roger Bertram to the nuns of St Bartholomew, Newcastle, of 2 1/2 acres of pasture in 'Merdesfen' (unidentified) in the east part of the 'Scamelis' (unidentified) next to the way and 1 toft in the town of 'Merdesfen' to be held in perpetual alms from him and his heirs for the souls of his father, mother and ancestors. 5 (named) witnesses. 2 translations in different hands, written on paper. Brand assigned the original to c.1190 (Brand History I 208) but the deed might date from the 13th century, relating to Roger Bertram, mentioned in a deed of 1225 as King's Justice Itinerant in Newcastle (Brand II 391)
