Title
Tithe barns and ecclesiastical buildings
Date
undated, first half 20th century
Level of description
Series
Scope and content
Writings on ecclesiastical buildings, beginning with excerpts from Ecclesia and Credo magazines. Within these works are drawings of the Churches and their religious history and events that are associated with them. These Churches range from those in England such as Ely and St. Pauls to Belgium and Ypres and Bruges.
Wall’s notebook includes a detailed outline of what he seeks to achieve in his research into the ecclesiastical buildings of England, i.e. to prove whether England’s ecclesiastical institutions can rival those of Europe’s states. He notes the histories of these sites, namely that of the monastic orders and their eventual demise at the hands of Henry VIII and the dissolution of the monasteries. He notes the number of those priories dissolved from 1538-1540, as well as receipts sent to the treasurer and charities sent to tithe houses by prominent individuals in the 16th century.
His notes on Friars and Cluniac are left largely unfinished and offer little detail apart from brief notes on Lewes Priory.
