Scope and content
'A Monumental Armory', collected by the Rev. John Hanson Sperling (1825-94). Consists of blazons of arms found on monuments, etc., in churches. Arranged in four volumes:- Vol. I. Essex; Vols. II-IV. Miscellaneous. Indexes of counties, parishes and names at the back of Vols. I-III, and front of Vol. IV. According to notes by Ralph Griffin (I, fol. iv; II, fol. i) these two volumes are not in the hand of the Rev. J. H. Sperling but were transcribed from his notebooks by a copyist who misread some of the entries.
