Scope and content
Marginal annotation that this was transcribed from the original in the possession of John Barbor, stationer, Southwark. Communicated to the Society by Joseph Ames, 18 March 1756: Minute Book VII, fol.254r-v (SAL/02/007/155).
By his will dated 25 August 1724 Gabriel Barbor, bequeathed a jewel carved with the portrait of Queen Elizabeth to his eldest son, John, on condition that if he had a daughter he should name her Elizabeth. The jewel (now Victoria and Albert Museum, 889-1894) had been made for his great-great-grandfather William Barbor (d. 1586), a staunch Protestant who escaped the stake on the death of Queen Mary; it descended through the family on the above condition.
The jewel and family documents were subsequently exhibited to the Society, 19 April 1866, by the Rev. E.E.Blencowe of West Walton, Suffolk: see Proceedings, 2nd series, 3 (1864-7), 270-1.
