Scope and content
Tipped in between pp.362 and 363: (i) a letter from Richard Russell, Wimborne Minster, 15 November 1755, concerning the arms of Sir Nicholas Brembar (Brembre), Lord Mayor of London, and enclosing an item found ‘fixed to a Grant of Lands’ which the writer thought ‘seems to be a species of shorthand’; (ii) a copy of a deed written in Hebrew. The letter here transcribed, from Emmanuel Mendes da Costa to Joseph Ames, 27 November 1755, includes a translation of the deed, with notes (pp.363-65): this was read to the Society 27 November 1755: Minute Book VII, fols.224-6 (SAL/02/007/141).
Followed (pp 365-71) by a postscript dated 14 July 1756, from Mendes da Costa, with translations of three other Hebrew deeds, all dating from the reign of King Henry III, lent to him by Henry Rooke, Keeper of Deeds in the Rolls Chapel, Chancery Lane, London.
This group is untitled in the Register; the title given here is taken from the contents list (SAL/10/10/097).
For the original letter from da Costa, see SAL/10/10/100/01; for his original translations of the deeds numbered 3 and 4, see SAL/10/10/100/16.
