Scope and content
In 1938-1939 landowner Mrs Pretty commissioned excavations of several burial mounds at Sutton Hoo, Suffolk. SAL's involvement was limited to publishing a report by C. W. Phillips in the Antiquaries Journal in 1940. In 1978, Robert Pretty invited SAL to undertake an excavation of the site in collaboration with the British Museum. A Research Trust was established in 1981 and SAL set up a Sutton Hoo Research Committee in 1982.
