Scope and content
In 1886 the Wiltshire Archaeological and Natural History Society contacted SAL concerning the protection, preservation and possible excavation of Stonehenge, which remained in private ownership. In 1918 barrister Cecil Chubb and his wife purchased the site and donated it to the nation, under the aegis of the Office of Works, who began a programme of restoration in 1919. SAL was called in to undertake associated excavations under the direction of Col. Hawley.
