SAL established the Apulia Committee in 1949, in collaboration with the British School in Rome, Society for the Promotion of Roman Studies, Prehistoric Society and Oxford University Anthropology Faculty, to sponsor and direct a British archaeological reconnaissance expedition to the Foggia plain in Apulia, South Italy in 1949. This confirmed a dense concentration of ancient sites revealed by British RAF photos in 1945 and was followed by excavations in 1949 and 1950 under the direction of John Bradford. After a lapse in activity, the Apulia Committee was reconstituted by SAL in 1961.
