Scope and content
In response to a paper theory presented by Abbé de la Rue on the origins of the Bayeux Tapestry, suggesting it was commissioned by Empress Matilda rather than Queen Matilda.

This letter is mentioned in the minutes from the meeting on 8th Feb 1827: https://collections.sal.org.uk/sal.02.035.089

The theory was first discussed in a letter from Thomas Amyot and published in Archaeologia Vol. 19 1821 pp. 192-208: https://www.cambridge.org/core/services/aop-cambridge-core/content/view/F1B9BB0153E5A5B0F75E94C9F09A9107/S0261340900022943a.pdf/xxv-a-defence-of-the-early-antiquity-of-the-bayeux-tapestry-by-thomas-amyot-esq-fsa-in-a-letter-addressed-to-henry-ellis-esq-frs-secretary.pdf

And again in the appendix of Volume 21, 1827, p.20, where another letter from Thomas Amyot references the continued debate: https://www.cambridge.org/core/services/aop-cambridge-core/content/view/BB59A5FB5B06ABF22FBF15D0166668C5/S0261340900019974a.pdf/appendix.pdf

A translation of the original paper ‘Memoir on the Celebrated Tapestry of Bayeux’ by the Abbé de la Rue was published in Archaeologia Vol. 17, 1814, pp. 85-109: https://www.cambridge.org/core/services/aop-cambridge-core/content/view/1E5FD2F16FB168AF66305ACB7F005484/S026134090001763Xa.pdf/iv-translation-of-a-memoir-on-the-celebrated-tapestry-of-bayeux-by-the-abbe-de-la-rue-communicated-by-the-translator-francis-douce-esq-fas-with-a-letter-to-the-secretary-nicholas-carlisle-esq.pdf
