Hamper presents a transcript of a letter from 1572 which he states details how, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, the Earl of Leicester circumvented religious laws to promote Puritan causes, by right of his freedom to “quote scriptures” freely and whenever “his purpose” required.

The transcript is included and is addressed to Robert Beale from the Earl of Leicester.
