Draft memorandum describing drawings by Mr Charles Stothard (the Society’s historical draughtsman) of 4 portions of the Bayeux Tapestry which were commissioned by the Society. Engravings of the drawings were made by James Basire and later hand coloured from the original Tapestry by Stothard and published in Vetusta Monumenta 1821-1823 Vol 6 Plates 1-17. Note, read 6 February 1817.
See Minutes of Meeting 6 February 1817 - also includes remarks on the state of the tapestry by Mr Stothard (not included in this memorandum) - drawings post-date damage to the Tapestry in the French Revolution and pre-date later repairs. First complete colour reproduction of the Tapestry made available to the public. The Society has the coloured engravings and the published plates.
