Extract from the Will of Sir George Colebrooke (died 5 August 1809) dated 14 July 1807 giving various bequests to the Society including money to be invested to provide cash prizes to the author of the best history of the Toleration of Religions and for the best historical composition of the Rise, Progress and Effects of the French Revolution.
Sir George Colebrooke was a colourful character, chairman of the East India Company and a bankrupt. He was known as Flash Alum due to his trading in alum. Through his wife he owned two slave plantations in Antigua.
