Scope and content
Collection of Raymond Russell, British antiquary and organologist (1922 - 1964), relating to military architecture in Malta. The Notebooks contain Russell's writings on the locations he visited in Malta, Gozo and Comino. The photographs cover these same locations, as well as inscriptions, maps and plans. The three albums contain older photographs of Malta (1860's, 1870's, early 1900's), two of the albums are from the Royal Engineers. The folder of Maps, Plans & Diagrams, contains official maps and plans as well as various sketches and tracings. The Notes & Correspondence cover the period 1959 - 1963, and includes newspaper cuttings, information booklets, letters from acquaintances providing information and correspondence relating to Russell's attempts to test fire a Fougasse.
Russell also collected clavichords and harpsichords, many of which were donated to Edinburgh University after his death, along with his notes and documentary photographs. These make up the "Raymond Russell Collection of Early Keyboard Instruments", held in St Cecilia's Hall in Edinburgh.
Russell had a further collection of early surgical instruments, with accompanying notes and photographs, which was donated to the Royal College of Surgeons of England after his death.
