Scope and content
Letter from CT Ramage to his mother from Naples on 28 April 1828, informing her that he will not leave Naples as soon as he intended and will not be in Rome until 10 June 1828. There has been a slight erruption of Vesuvius, and he ascended to the summit of the mountain to witness it discharging liquid and stones, and see the opposite side of the mountain collapse into the crater ('I consider myself remarkably lucky in seeing one of the most sublime phenomena in nature'). He subsequently observes the effects of an earthquake on the island of Ischia, and saw villages where not a house remained undamaged and many collapsed burying an unknown number of inhabitants. Talks of raising a collection of over £20 for the relief effort. Indicates that he cannot get to England before the beginning of October, at which time he must be in Cambridge if he is to commence his studies there.
