Scope and content
Letter from CT Ramage to his mother from Naples on 14 January 1828. Refers to having received his mother's response to his previous letter [RAM/02/9] and abandoning his project of translating from the German, considering Adam Black's opinion to be correct. Regrets leaving Naples, in part due to 'some little affair of the heart'. Speaks of Dr Henderson, author of a work on wines and a great antiquarian, being his greatest friend in Naples. Indicates that he plans not to marry until he can support a wife in a manner he sees proper. Refers to the illness of a number of acquaintances, particularly with consumption, saying he thought "marriage prevented it generally". Asks his mother to send this letter to 'Archy' lest there be any mistake in copying the learned terms or Greek characters [such text appears to be missing from the letter].
