This is one of a series of drawings labelled I-VIIII by William McPherson Rice, of objects found in a shipwreck in the River Rother.
The wreck was excavated in 1822, and from the method of construction was deemed to be a Dutch trading vessel. Documentary evidence for the silting up of the Rother puts the date of the shipwreck before 1623. An account was read at the Society of Antiquaries' meeting on 7 November 1822.
