Rectangular wooden printing block showing:-
Obverse: carved and engraved design depicting fifteenth century silver gilt and enamel spoon, and the obverse and reverse sides of its leather case; the spoon has a hexagonal shaft divided by a moulded band, underneath which is an inscription, with a spherical top, and a bowl with floral and leaf decorations around a central engraving reading 'Ave Maria'. The case engraved to the side is pear-shaped and decorated with birds and a scroll reading 'Ave Maria' on the obverse, and bosses taking the form of lion's heads on the reverse through which ropes or cords pass, with the centre showing parts of the spoon within the case when opened. Along the bottom of the case is the artist's signature, 'Praetorius'. Ink residue remaining on surface.
Reverse: printer's waste paper with type attached to surface with handwritten publication reference in pencil.
Digitised thanks to the kind donation of Mr Richard Halsey MBE FSA.
