Reference note
Taken from the original broadside: no. 203 (The High and mighty prince Charles, Prince of Wales, &c. the manner of his arriuall at the Spanish court...)
Rectangular wooden printing block showing:-
Obverse: carved and engraved design depicting a reproduction of a woodcut illustration from a 17th century broadside, originally from 1623; showing a scene representing the court of James I of England; the King, crowned and wearing a robe, is shown embracing a kneeling Charles, Prince of Wales (later Charles I), also wearing a robe, with three additional court figures observing over the King's shoulder. In the background is a crowd of people outside a tavern (with hanging sign visible), with hats thrown in the hair; a bonfire being lit; a bell being rung; an 'alewife' bringing out drinking cups and a male figure carrying a large jug or vase. Image reproduced from a sheet commemorating the return of Prince Charles from Spain, having sought but failed to secure a marriage with the daughter of Philip III of Spain, with long, poetic descriptions of the Prince's travels. Printed in London. Ink residue remaining on surface.
Reverse: print of image from the obverse attached to surface, partly ripped.
Digitised thanks to the kind donation of Mr Geoffrey Battersby.
