Obverse: carved and engraved design depicting a reproduction of a woodcut illustration from a 16th century broadside, originally from 1580; showing a corpse wrapped in a shroud, tied at both ends, lying on top of a grave resting on a spade and a mattock. Surrounding the central device are several skulls, bones, and small trees - the scene depicts the death of the Genoese merchant, Benedict Spinola, in 1580. Image reproduced from a dedication to Spinola, titled 'An Epitaph upon the death of the worshipfull Maister Benedict Spinola Merchaunt of Genoa, and free Denizon of England, who dyed on Tuesday the 12 of Julie. 1580.' Printed in London by Thomas East. Ink residue remaining on surface.
