At the time of publication, it was thought that this cannon 'was the first that was made in England,' perhaps at Buxted near Lewis. At that time it was still operational, and had 'served for many years for the amusement of the people on a holiday or fair day; when they collect money to buy gunpowder to throw the shell to a hill about a mile distant.'
