Charles Newton, Notes on the Sculptures at Wilton House (London: John Murray, 1849), pp. 11-12, cat. no. 48.Newton describes the scene as 'Jupiter seated in a chair bearing an eagle on his wrist. Before him a candelabrum, and a young athlete, with his hands in a lebes, or cauldron, placed on a tripod. Above is inscribed, in archaic letters [Greek inscription] 'Mantheus, son of Æthus, offers thanks to Jupiter for his vistory in the Pentathlon (or contest of five games) of youths.'He quotes another author who says it came from the Peloponnese. Newton concludes that the relief is 'an ancient copy of an archaic monument, retouched by some modern hand.'
