A cast in plaster, coloured as a facsimile of the original, representing a small portion of the Bayeux Tapestry, being the upper part of a figure of the Conqueror, given from the drawings by Charles Stothard in the Vetusta Monumenta, vol. vi. pl. XVII. This facsimile cast was made by him at the time when, in the capacity of historical draughtsman to the Society, he was permitted to make drawings of every part of that Tapestry in the years 1816 and 1817.
This cast reproduces a small portion of the Bayeux Tapestry, depicting a seated William of Normandy. Charles Stothard took a number of plaster casts from the Bayeux Tapestry, which he then hand painted. Stothard created this facsimile by pressing wax into the tapestry fabric to form a mould, which was then filled with plaster. The British Museum holds three other casts by Stothard, made using this technique.
