A history of the use of altar canopies, or baldachins, altar furniture, rood altars and superaltars/portable altars, with descriptions from the 4th century onwards and notes relating to the developing role of the altar. There is a list of all known superaltars and descriptions of where portable altars where known to have been used, as well as detailed histories of specific altars, including the Glastonbury Abbey superaltar and great sapphire.Some drawings and photographs of existing examples are included and some dimensions are given for British altars.
